Etagebebyggelse omfatter bygninger til helårsbeboelse med vandret etageadskillelse, tæt-lav omfatter række-, kæde- og dobbelthuse med lodret adskillelse, mens åben-lav bebyggelse omfatter fritliggende huse typisk parcelhuse og stuehuse til landbrugsejendomme.

Danish planning typically distinguishes between the following types of housing: apartment buildings (also called blocks of flats), high-density and low-rise buildings and low-density and low-rise buildings. Apartment buildings include apartments for year-round occupancy with horizontally divided stories. High-density and low-rise buildings include terraced houses (also called townhouses and row houses) and semi-detached houses divided by vertical separation. Low-density and low-rise housing includes detached houses and farmhouses.
