Bygningsreglementet er et tillæg til byggeloven, der uddyber en række proceduremæssige krav, blandt andet om byggetilladelser, dispensationer og udregning af bebyggelsesprocent og etageareal. Derudover rummer bygningsreglementet en række krav til bebyggelsens højde- og afstandsforhold, blandt andet afstand til vej og skel. Disse kan fraviges, hvis den gældende lokalplan indeholder bestemmelser, som tilsidesætter disse krav. Endelig indeholder bygningsreglementet krav til bygningens indretning og adgangsforhold, brandforhold, isolering (mod fugt, varme og lyd), indeklima mv. Disse kan ikke tilsidesættes.

The building regulations are a supplement to the Building Act and deepen and clarify several procedural requirements, such as building permits, exemptions and how to estimate the plot ratio of an area and the maximum gross floor space. The building regulations also contain a list of requirements for the building’s height and distance, such as to other buildings and roads. These regulations may be deviated from if the local plan contains provisions that overrule them. Finally, the building regulations contain standards for the building’s layout, accessibility, fire safety, insulation (against damp, heat and sound), indoor environment etc. These regulations may not be disregarded.
