Friareal kan reguleres af fysisk planlægning gennem lokalplanen, og de fleste lokalplaner indeholder bestemmelser om arealer, der skal friholdes for bebyggelse og eventuelt beplantes. Større friarealer kan også indgå som en del af kommuneplanen. Friarealer kan være mange ting, eksempelvis grønne områder, parkeringspladser og færdselsarealer.

Large open spaces can also be part of municipal planning. Open spaces include many things such as green spaces, parking lots and traffic areas.
