national definition:Med den nye kommunalreform er Danmark (fra januar 2007) inddelt i 98 kommuner.
Den arealmæssigt største nye kommune er Ringkøbing-Skjern Kommune, der dækker et areal på 1.489 km2. Den mindste kommune er Frederiksberg Kommune med kun 8,7 km2. Københavns Kommune er med 502.362 indbyggere fortsat den folkerigeste. Færrest bor der i Læsø Kommune, som har 2.145 indbyggere.
En kommunes øverste politiske myndighed er kommunalbestyrelsen. Kommunens hovedopgaver er planlægning, drift og administration på social-, beskæftigelses-, sundheds-, skole- og kulturområderne, fysisk planlægning, byggeri, miljø og kommunal infrastruktur. Opgaverne finansieres af kommune- og ejendomsskatter, tilskud fra staten (bloktilskud) og indbyrdes udligningsordninger imellem kommunerne.
Som følge af det decentrale danske plansystem har kommunerne et stort (og voksende) ansvar for den fysiske planlægning, primært gennem udarbejdelse af kommune- og lokalplaner.

Pursuant to the reform of local government that entered into force in January 2007, Denmark is divided into 98 municipalities.
The Municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern covers the biggest area – 1489 km2, and the Municipality of Frederiksberg (in the central part of Copenhagen) only covers 8.7 km2. The Municipality of Copenhagen is the most populous with 502,362 inhabitants, and the Municipality of Læsø (an island) has only 2145 inhabitants.
The municipal council is the highest political authority in a municipality. The main tasks of the municipality are planning, operations and administration in the social, employment, health, school and cultural sectors, spatial planning, construction, environmental tasks and municipal infrastructure. These tasks are financed by municipal income taxes and real estate taxes, subsidies from the state and the intermunicipal fiscal equalization scheme.
As a consequence of the decentralization of Denmark’s planning system, the municipalities have great (and growing) responsibility for spatial planning, mainly by preparing municipal and local plans.
