Yhdyskuntia ja seutuja koskeva lakiperusteinen fyysinen suunnittelu, jossa lainsäädännön avulla ja hallintopäätöksin pyritään ohjaamaan maa-alueiden ja tarvittaessa vesialueiden järjestelyä ja käyttöä. Maankäyttö- ja rakennuslain käyttämä käsite, joka vastaa käytännössä suunnittelukäytäntökielen "maankäytön suunnittelu" -käsitettä.

english definition:

Statutory physical planning concerning urban areas, smaller settlements and regions and aiming to steer the organisation and use of land areas, and water areas when needed, with the help of legislation and administrative actions.About the same as the Finnish term "maankäytön suunnittelu". This is used in the text of the Land Use and Building Act, but in practice "maankäytön suunnittelu" is much more common.
