Maakunta

Valtion aluejakoyksikkö alueiden kehittämistä ja alueiden käytön suunnittelua varten.
Maakunnaksi määrätään alue, johon kuuluvat kunnat muodostavat toiminnallisesti ja taloudellisesti sekä alueen suunnittelun kannalta tarkoituksenmukaisen kokonaisuuden.
Valtioneuvosto päättää maakuntien lukumäärän, alueet ja nimet asianomaisia maakuntien liittoja ja kuntia kuultuaan.

Region

english definition:

A territorial division unit of the State created for regional development and land use planning purposes; i.e. a territory of a Regional Council.
An area to be named as a region is composed of municipalities which form together, functionally and economically as well as for the purposes of the planning of the area, an appropriate whole.
The number as well as the areas and names of the regions is decided by the Government after hearing the Regional Councils and the municipalities concerned.
