Rannan osa, jolle sijoittuvalla rakentamisella on välittömiä vaikutuksia vesistöön sekä rantaluontoon ja maisemaan.
Rantavyöhykkeen leveyteen vaikuttavat alueen kasvillisuus,
maisema, maasto ja muut luonnonolosuhteet. Käytännössä rantavyöhykkeen leveydeksi on yleensä arvioitu noin 100 metriä.
