Vähintään 200 asukkaan rakennusryhmä, jossa rakennusten välinen etäisyys ei yleensä ole 200 metriä suurempi.
Käsitteellä on tämä tarkka Tilastokeskuksen määritelmä, joka on yhtenäinen kaikissa Pohjoismaissa (vuodesta 1960). Taajamien rajaus ei noudata hallinnollisia rajoja.
Haja-asutusalueen vastakohta.
Käsite on enemmän tilastollinen kuin suunnittelun käytäntökielen käsite. Ei esiinny maankäyttö- ja rakennuslainsäädännössä, mutta kylläkin eräissä yleiseen järjestykseen liittyvissä laeissa.

Densely populated area

english definition:

A group of buildings with at least 200 inhabitants, where the distance between the buildings is usually no more than 200 meters.
The term has this exact definition by the Statistics Finland, which is common to all the Nordic countries (since 1960). The definition do not follow any administrative borders.
Opposite to "sparsely populated area".
The term is more a statistical than a planning practice term. The term does not exist in the land use and building legislation, but in some other Acts related to public order.
