Apdzīvojumu raksturo iedzīvotāju daudzums un to izvietojums teritorijā, apdzīvoto vietu lielums (iedzīvotāju skaits un teritorija), skaits, izvietojums, tipi un savstarpējo saikņu intensitāte un veidi. Tas ir iedzīvotāju izvietojums teritorijā (dzīvesvietu teritoriālais sadalījums), kas ietver trīs savstarpēji saistītus komponentus - iedzīvotājus, apdzīvotās vietas un teritoriju.

Settlement pattern is settlement distribution in territory and its locations spatial system. Settlement pattern are characterized by the number and location of population in the territory, the size of settlements (number of inhabitants and territory), the number of settlements, their location, types of settlements, intensity and types of mutual linkages. That is the location of population in territory (spatial distribution of human habitats) that comprises of three mutually connected components - population, settlements and territories.
