Apūdeņošanas vajadzība Latvijā novērojama sausās vasarās vai atsevišķos vasaras periodos, to ietekmē arī augiem pieejamie ūdens krājumi augsnē un gruntsūdens līmenis. Latvijā apūdeņošana atmaksājas tikai intensīvi apsaimniekojot platības, galvenokārt dārzeņu laukos, siltumnīcās, atsevišķos gadījumos arī augļu dārzos un ganībās. Izmantojot apūdeņošanas sistēmas, nav pieļaujama ūdens avotu piesārņošana ar virszemes noteci un ūdens noplūde dziļāk par augu sakņu zonu.

In Latvia the crop water needs are not covered by natural rainfall in dry summers or during dry periods in the summer. Water deficiency depends also from the plant available moisture in soil and groundwater table. It is essential to evaluate the economic viability of irrigation considering the intensity of agricultural land use. Most common irrigated profitable crops in Latvia are vegetables, greenhouse crops, and in some cases pastures and orchards. During irrigation surface run-off causing pollution of water sources and water leakage deeper than root zone should be avoided.
