Biosfēras rezervāti ir UNESCO izdalītas dabas aizsardzības teritorijas ar mērķi nodibināt starptautisku aizsargājamo teritoriju tīklu, kas aptveru piemērus no visas planētas veģetācijas un fizioģeogrāfiskajiem veidiem. Biosfēras rezervāti aptver plašas teritorijas, kurās atrodas starptautiski nozīmīgas ainavas un ekosistēmas. Biosfēras rezervātus izveido Saeima ar attiecīgu likumu. Biosfēras rezervātu izveidošanas mērķis ir nodrošināt dabas daudzveidības saglabāšanu un veicināt ilgtspējīgu teritorijas sociālo un ekonomisko attīstību. Biosfēras rezervāti ietver mazskartu veģetāciju un dažāda veida kultūras ainavas, kam kopumā tiek nodrošināta aizsardzība. Biosfēras rezervātu teritoriju iedala funkcionālajās zonās atkarībā no tajā atļautās saimnieciskās, rekreācijas, izglītojošās vai cita veida darbības, kas nav pretrunā ar šīs teritorijas aizsardzības un izmantošanas noteikumiem un biosfēras rezervāta izveidošanas mērķi.

english definition:Biosphere reserve means one of series of conservation sites designated by the UNESCO in an attempt to establish an international network of protected areas encompassing examples of all the Earth's major vegetation and physiographic types. Biosphere reserves are broad territories in which landscapes and ecosystems of international significance are located. Biosphere reserves are established by the parliament by adopting a relevant law. The goal of establishing biosphere reserves is to ensure the preservation of natural diversity and to promote sustainable social and economic development of the territory. Biosphere reserves contain virgin vegetation, plus various kinds of cultural landscape, in the whole of which conservation is practiced. In biosphere reserve's territory the following functional zones are designated according to the permitted commercial, recreational, educational or other activity that are not violating nature protection and management regulations and the purposes of the founding of the biosphere reserve.
