Būve - būvniecības procesā radies ar zemi saistīts arhitektonisks, tehnisks vai konstruktīvs virszemes, pazemes vai zemūdens veidojums, kam ir noteiktas funkcijas. Būve projektējama un būvējama tā, lai nodrošinātu vides arhitektonisko kvalitāti, vides pieejamību, dabas resursu racionālu izmantošanu, kā arī visas būves un tās atsevišķu daļu stiprību un stabilitāti, ugunsdrošību, drošību lietošanā, higiēniskumu un nekaitīgumu cilvēka veselībai un videi, energoefektivitāti un akustiskās prasības. Būvi drīkst izmantot tikai atbilstoši projektētajām funkcijām un vienīgi pēc tās pieņemšanas ekspluatācijā. Kārtību, kādā būve projektējama, būvējama un pieņemama ekspluatācijā, nosaka Latvijas būvnormatīvi.

Structure (building) is an architectural, technical or constructive underground, subsurface or underwater formation connected to the ground, which has emerged during the construction process that has a specific function. A structure can be designed and constructed to ensure the architectonic quality of the environment, accessibility of the environment, rational utilization of natural resources, as well as the solidity and stability, fire safety, safety in use, hygienicity and harmlessness to human health and the environment, energy efficiency and acoustic requirements of the structure in general and separate parts thereof. A structure may be only used in conformity with the designed functions and only subsequent to the acceptance for operation thereof.
