Saskaņā ar Aizsargjoslu likumu būvlaide ir līnija, kas nosaka attālumu no sarkanās līnijas līdz apbūvei. Tā ir teritorijas plānojumā zemes gabalam noteikta līnija, no kuras sākot, virzienā no ielas uz zemes gabala dziļumu, drīkst izvietot galvenās ēkas. Rīgas pilsētā atkarībā no nepieciešamajiem apbūves kompozicionālajiem risinājumiem teritorijas plānojumos nosaka šādus īpašus būvlaižu veidus, kur galvenās ēkas galvenajai fasādei obligāti jāsakrīt ar būvlaidi: 1) atkāpes būvlaide - obligātā būvlaide, kas nosaka, ka galvenās ēkas galvenajai fasādei obligāti jāsakrīt ar būvlaidi, bet ēkas apjomā zemes līmenī jāveido atkāpe no būvlaides, lai tā, pieskaitot ietves platumu, veidotu ne mazāku kā 6 m attālumu; 2) iedibināta būvlaide - esošās apbūves ielas frontes veidotā līnija, ja kvartāla robežās vismaz piecos zemes gabalos galvenās ēkas atrodas uz vienas līnijas; un 3) obligātā būvlaide - tāda būvlaide, kas nosaka, ka galvenās ēkas galvenajai fasādei obligāti jāsakrīt ar būvlaidi, pat tad, ja tā nav iedibinātā būvlaide.

In accordance to the Protection Zone Law the building setback line is a line which determines the distance from the red line to the building. It is in the spatial planning specified line of plot, starting from which, in the direction from street to the depth of plot, the main buildings may be located. In Riga City depending on the necessary compositional solutions of building, the following special building setback line types have been specified, where the main elevation of building should mandatory coincide with the building setback line: 1) deviated building setback line - a mandatory building setback line, which determines that the elevation of the main building should coincide with the building setback line, but on the scale of building shall make the deviation from the building setback line on the ground level in the distance no less than 6 m, including the width of pavement; 2) established building setback line - a line formed by the street's frontline of the existing building, if within the boundaries of block on at least five land plots the main buildings has been located on the one line; and 3) mandatory building setback line - the building setback line, which determines that the main elevation of the main building mandatory shall coincide with the building setback line, even then, if it is not an established building setback line.
