LPSR bija blīvi apdzīvota vieta laukos ( strādnieku, kūrortu un vasarnīcu ciemati). Pēc 1991. gada apdzīvotām vietām nav oficiāla ciemata statusa, tomēr nosaukums tiek lietots atsevišķos dokumentos un sadzīvē. Jaunizbūvējamas teritorijas, kurām nav oficiāla kompaktas apdzīvotas vietas statusa, bet kurām ir atsevišķu kompakti būvētu galvenokārt privātmāju puduri, tiek dēvētas par ciematiem jeb pļavu ciematiem.

english definition:

In Soviet Period the term 'ciemats' for compact village was used as official name for rural compact settlement (workers, resort, and summer cottages compact villages). After 1991 rural settlements official do not have such status, however term is used quite widely in documents and in life. New greenfield sites that do not have official status as compact settlement but have already a group of compactly built new houses (mainly detached private houses) are often named as 'ciemats' or 'pļavu ciemats' (compact village on meadows).
