Dabas rezervāti ir cilvēka darbības neskartas vai mazpārveidotas teritorijas, kurās tiek nodrošināta dabisko procesu netraucēta attīstība, lai aizsargātu un izpētītu retas vai tipiskas ekosistēmas un to sastāvdaļas. Dabas rezervātos ir zonas, kurās visi dabas resursi pilnībā tiek izslēgti no saimnieciskās un cita veida darbības. Dabas rezervātu teritorijā var būt zonas, kurās atļauta ierobežota saimnieciskā, rekreācijas, izglītojošā vai citāda darbība, kas neapdraud dabas etalonu saglabāšanos un nav pretrunā ar aizsardzības un izmantošanas noteikumiem un rezervāta izveidošanas mērķi. Dabas rezervātus izveido Saeima ar attiecīgu likumu.

Strict nature reserves are territories untouched by human activities or nearly natural, in which territories unhindered development of natural processes shall be ensured in order to protect and study rare or typical ecosystems and parts thereof. Strict nature reserves shall have zones in which all natural resources are completely excluded from economic and other activities. In the territories of strict nature reserves there may be zones in which restricted economic, recreational, educational or other activities are permitted, provided that such activities do not endanger the preservation of nature standards and do not contradict protection and utilisation regulations and the goal of the establishment of the reserve. Strict nature reserves are established by the national parliament by adopting a relevant law.
