Ģeoloģiskie pētījumi ir visu veidu ģeoloģiskie darbi, kuru mērķis ir noskaidrot zemes dzīļu uzbūvi, sastāvu, īpašības, stāvokli, kā arī derīgo izrakteņu un zemes dzīļu noderīgo īpašību izplatības un izvietojuma likumsakarības. Zemes dzīļu monitorings ir zemes dzīļu stāvokļa novērošanas, kontroles, analīzes un prognozēšanas sistēma.

Geological research means geological activities of all types, the aim of which is to discover the structure, composition, properties, state of subterranean depths, as well as regularities of spread of useful properties and location of mineral resources and subterranean depths. Monitoring of subterranean depths means the system of observation, control, analysis and forecasting of the state of subterranean depths.
