Pirms kultūras pieminekļa restaurācijas vai rekonstrukcijas projekta izstrādes veic kultūrvēsturisko inventarizāciju (vizuāli izpētot objektu un veicot fotofiksāciju, iegūst informāciju par pieminekļa vēsturisko, zinātnisko un māksliniecisko vērtību, esošo un saglabājamo kultūrvēsturiski nozīmīgo detaļu aprakstu un apjomu) vai kultūrvēsturisko izpēti (apkopo vēsturisko informāciju, ieskaitot fotofiksācijas materiālus, un izpēta kultūras pieminekļa struktūru, lai iegūtu zinātnisku informāciju par pieminekli).
