Lauku apdzīvotās vietas ir jebkura apdzīvota vieta, kura spēkā esošajos normatīvajos aktos nav noteikta kā pilsēta. Lauku apdzīvotās vietas tiek dalītas divās pamatgrupās - biezi apdzīvotās vietas (ciemi) un reti apdzīvotās vietas (viensētas).

Rural settlements are any human settlement that in accordance to existing normative documents are not defined as urban settlement (city or town). Rural settlements are divided in two main groups - densely populated settlements (villages) and sparsely populated settlements (isolated dwellings).
