Laukums ir publiskās ārtelpas teritorijas zeme un būve vai tās daļa, kas izmantota vai plānota līdzīgiem nolūkiem kā lielceļš, maģistrāle vai iela, kā arī apstādījumiem, nodrošinot pulcēšanās iespēju. Laukums ietver teritoriju, ko plānā iezīmē lielceļu, maģistrāļu, pilsētas un vietējo ielu vai piebrauktuvju iekšējās vai ārējās sarkanās līnijas, kā arī no apbūves brīvās kvartālu teritorijas, bet telpiski - aiz sarkanajām līnijām atļauto izmantošanu apbūve un/vai apstādījumi. Laukuma robežās var būt arī apstādījumi, pieminekļi, strūklakas un citas ar rekreāciju saistītas būves, pazemes vai virszemes autonovietnes, ja to ierīkošana netraucē satiksmei, kā arī citas šajā izbūves teritorijā atļautās izmantošanas. Laukumi kalpo par cilvēku satikšanās, pulcēšanās vietu, vietu dažādu pasākumu un priekšnesumu rīkošanai, svētku svinēšanai un vienkārši atpūtai. english definition:Square (place, plaza) is a territory of open public space, land, structure or part thereof, which has planned or utilized for similar purposes as highway, trunk road or street, as well as for the greenery, provided that there are facilities for assemblies. The area includes territory represented by internal or external red lines of highways, trunk roads, city and local streets or access roads, and territories of blocks, which are free from building up as well, but spatially - building up of permitted utilizations and/or greenery behind the red lines. Within the boundaries of area the greenery, monuments, fountains and other with recreation related structures may be established, as well as the underground or overground parking places, if the establishment thereof do not hinder the traffic, and the other permitted utilizations in the building territory. Squares serve as places of meeting of people, assembly points, places for carrying out various activities and shows, celebrating of holidays and just for recreation. Plentiful and varied life needs space. Squares give this possibility and they ensure safer and more peaceful urban environment.
