Pazemes ūdeņi ir visi ūdeņi, kas atrodas zem zemes virsmas ar ūdeni piesātinātajā zonā un ir tiešā saskarē ar augsni vai nogulumiežiem. Pazemes ūdensobjekts ir telpiski norobežota pazemes ūdens horizonta vai ūdens horizontu kompleksa daļa. Pazemes ūdeņu horizonts ir pazemes iežu slānis vai slāņi, kā arī citas ģeoloģiskas slāņkopas ar pietiekamu porainību un ūdenscaurlaidību, lai nodrošinātu nozīmīgu ūdens plūsmu vai nozīmīga daudzuma ūdens atdevi. Pazemes ūdens horizontu komplekss ir savstarpēji saistītu pazemes ūdens slāņu, horizontu vai struktūru sakopojums.

Groundwater is all water which is below the surface of the ground in the saturation zone and in direct contact with the ground or subsoil. Body of groundwater is spatially confined part of the underground water horizon or complex of underground water horizons or complex of aquifers. Underground water horizon is a subsurface layer or layers of rock, as well as other geological strata of sufficient porosity and permeability to ensure a significant flow of groundwater or the abstraction of significant quantities of water. Complex of underground water horizons is a combination of mutually connected layers of underground water, horizons or structures.
