Sanācija ir piesārņotas vietas attīrīšana un atveseļošana vismaz līdz tādai pakāpei, ka turpmāk cilvēku veselība vai vide netiek apdraudēta un attiecīgo teritoriju iespējams izmantot noteiktai saimnieciskai darbībai. Piesārņotu vietu sanāciju veic, ja ir pārsniegti vides kvalitātes normatīvu robežlielumi; un ja piesārņojums var apdraudēt cilvēku veselību vai vidi. Sanācija ietver pasākumus, kas veicami, lai novērstu piesārņojuma izplatīšanos vai iekļūšanu pazemes ūdeņos un atjaunotu vai uzlabotu vides kvalitāti piesārņotā vietā.

Remediation (recovery) means cleaning-up and rehabilitation of a polluted area at least to such an extent that in the future there are no threats posed to human health or the environment and that the respective area can be used for certain economic activities. Remediation of polluted sites is performed if - the limits of environmental quality restrictions have been exceeded or if the pollution may endanger human health or the environment. Remediation includes measures to be taken in order to prevent the spreading of the pollution or its penetration into underground waters and to restore or to improve the environmental quality in a polluted site.
