Spesialområder dekker ulike former for arealbruk:
Private veger, camping, områder for anlegg i grunnen, i vassdrag eller i sjøen, områder med bygninger og anlegg som på grunn av historisk, antikvarisk eller annen kulturell verdi skal bevares, fiskebruk, områder for reindrift, friluftsområder som ikke faller inn under friområder(jf.), parkbelte i industriområde, naturvernområder, klimavernsoner, vannforsyningskilder med nedslagsfelt, frisiktsoner ved vei, restriksjonsområde rundt flyplass, og område og anlegg for drift av radionavigasjonsmidler utenfor flyplass, områder for anlegg og drift av kommunalteknisk virksomhet, grav- og urnelunder, vann- og avløpsanlegg, områder for bygging og drift av anlegg for energiproduksjon eller fjernvarme, taubane, fornøyelsespark, golfbane, steinbrudd og massetak samt andre områder for vesentlig terrenginngerp, anlegg for Televerket og øvingsområder med tilhørende anlegg for forsvaret og sivilforsvaret.

Special areas covers a vide category of land uses:
Private roads, camping, areas for installations in the ground and in watercourses or for marine installations, areas with buildings and installations, which should be preserved on account of their historical, antiquarian or other cultural value, fishing settlements, reindeer farming areas, areas for open-air recreation that are not included in Public outdoor recreation areas (cf.), green belts in industrial areas, nature conservation areas, climate conservation zones, sources of water supply with catchment’s area, areas with unobstructed visibility close to roads, areas where building is restricted around airports, and areas and installations for operation of radio navigation aids outside airports, areas for installation and operation of municipal technical facilities, graveyards and cemeteries, water and sewerage installations, areas for construction and operation of plants for energy production and district heating, cableways, amusement parks, golf courses, stone quarries and soil extraction sites and other areas entailing significant encroachment on terrain, installations for the Telecommunications Administration and exercise areas with appurtenant installations for the Defense Forces and the Civil Defense.
