Biologisk mångfald är ett samlat begrepp för variationen hos allt levande på jorden, såväl på genetisk nivå som bland arter och ekosystem. Ett av dagens stora globala miljöproblem är förlusten av biologisk mångfald.
I Sverige har många arter försvunnit som en följd av effektivare metoder inom jord- och skogsbruk samt genom decimering av antalet våtmarker.
Sverige har sedan FNs konferens om miljö och utveckling i Rio de Janeiro 1992 vidtagit en rad åtgärder i sitt arbete med bevarandet av den biologiska mångfalden. Bland annat så beslutade riksdagen 1994 om en strategi för biologisk mångfald som bland annat slog fast att varje sektor ansvarar för att dess egna aktiviteter bidrar till upprätthållandet av biologisk mångfald. Samma år bildades ett nationellt centrum för biologisk mångfald. Centrumets uppgift är att samordna, initiera och bedriva forskning, utbildning och information med sikte på att bevara, hållbart nyttja samt restaurera biologisk mångfald i Sverige.

Biological diversity is a collective term describing the variation of all living things on earth, both on the genetic level as well as among species in an ecosystem. One of the great environmental problems of today is the loss of biological diversity.
Many species in Sweden have disappeared as a consequence of more efficient methods used in agriculture and forestry, as well as through the decimation of the number of wetlands.
Since the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, Sweden has taken a number of measures in its work with the conservation of biological diversity. Among other measures, the Swedish parliament decided in 1994 on a strategy for biological diversity. This strategy determined that each sector is responsible for ensuring that its activities contribute to the conservation of biological diversity. In the same year, a national centre for biological diversity was established. The centre has as its task to co-ordinate, initiate and conduct research, education and information in order to preserve and restore the biological diversity in Sweden and to utilise this diversity in a sustainable way.
