Expropriation är en rättslig åtgärd varigenom äganderätt, nyttjanderätt eller servitutsrätt till fastighet tvångsvis och mot ersättning tas i anspråk för att tillgodose ett allmänt intresse. Expropriation får endast ske för vissa i lag speciellt angivna ändamål och behov samt efter tillstånd av regeringen. Regeringen kan dock under vissa förhållande överlämna till länsstyrelse eller annan myndighet att besluta i frågor som rör expropriation.
Exempel på ändamål som kan tillgodoses genom expropriation är tätbebyggelse, kommunikationer, försvaret, naturvården, friluftslivet, mark för skydds- och säker-hetsområde.

Expropriation is a legal measure through which ownership rights, the rights of use or easement of a real property are claimed, through coercive measures and against compensation, in order to meet a public interest. Expropriation can only take place for certain purposes and needs that are specified by law, and following governmental approval. The government can in certain cases delegate the right to decide on expropriation to the county administrative board or other public authority.
Examples of purposes that can be met through expropriation include: the building-up of areas, communications, defence, environmental protection, outdoor recreation, land for protected and security restricted areas.
