I svensk statistik förekommer begreppen småhus och flerbostadshus. Småhus är en sammanfattande benämning på enbostadshus och friliggande tvåbostadshus. Enbostadshusen kan vara friliggande eller sammanbyggda. Ett friliggande enbostadshus är ett friliggande hus med en bostadslägenhet, medan de sammanbyggda enbostadshusen utgörs av flera enbostadshus sammanbyggda i länga eller parvis, var och ett med egen ingång. Om de olika husen gränsar direkt till varandra kallas de radhus. Om husen är skilda åt med garage eller dylikt kallas de kedjehus. Då det gäller friliggande tvåbostadshus är de friliggande bostäderna antingen belägna ovanför varandra eller bredvid varandra. De som ligger bredvid varandra har gemensam ingång från det fria. Till begreppet flerbostadshus räknas hus som inte är småhus, även sammanbyggda tvåbostadshus och hus med lokaler som har minst en bostadslägenhet.
Ett annat sätt att skilja olika hustyper åt är att dela in dem i permanenthus och fritidshus. Permanenthus är hus som är gjorda för året runt boende, medan fritidshus endast är avsedda för fritidsändamål. År 1995 fanns det 680 000 fritidshus och 4,2 miljoner lägenheter i permanenthus.

In Swedish statistics the terms ‘one or two dwelling house' and ‘multi-dwelling house' can be found. The term one or two dwelling house covers one dwelling houses and free-standing two dwelling houses. One dwelling houses can be free-standing or connected to other houses. Free-standing one dwelling houses are free-standing houses with one dwelling, whereas one dwelling houses that are connected to other houses consist of several one dwelling houses in a row or in pairs, each of the dwellings with its own entrance. If the different houses directly abut each other it is called a terraced house. If they are divided by means of a garage or similar, they are called semidetached houses. For free-standing two dwelling houses the individual dwellings are situated either one above the other, or next to each other. Those next to each other have a shared outer entrance. The term multi-dwelling house includes houses that are not one or two dwelling houses, including two dwelling houses that are connected to other houses as well as houses with premises and at least one dwelling.
Another way of categorising types of houses is to divide them into houses for permanent residence and holiday homes. Houses for permanent residence are houses built for year-round residence whilst holiday homes are houses only intended for recreational purposes. In 1995 there were 680 000 holiday homes and 4.2 million dwellings in houses for permanent residence.
