Termen konsekvensanalys används väldigt fritt i Sverige, dvs. i alla möjliga sammanhang. I plan- och bygglagen finns krav på att konsekvensanalyser ska genomföras för att belysa följderna av ett översiktsplaneförslag. Konsekvenserna av översiktsplanen skall kunna utläsas utan svårighet. Förutom konsekvenser av miljömässig karaktär kan analysen även gälla konsekvenser av både social och ekonomisk karaktär.

The term impact analysis is used very freely and in Sweden in a wide range of contexts. The Planning and Building Act demands that impact analyses be performed to elucidate the impacts of a proposal in a comprehensive plan. The impacts of the comprehensive plan have to be formulated in such a way that they can be understood without difficulty. Beside environmental impacts the analysis can concern social and economic impacts.
