Regional utveckling handlar i Sverige främst om utveckling av infrastruktur, näringsliv och ekonomi, men på senare tid har ökad vikt även lagts vid kultur, miljö och social utveckling.
Länsstyrelserna har traditionellt haft ansvaret för arbetet med regional utveckling. I vissa län har det regionala utvecklingsansvaret överförts till s k regionala självstyrelseorgan. Sådana finns nu I Skåne och Västra Götalands län samt i Gotlands kommun.
Landstingen har också ansvar inom arbetet med regional utveckling och de svenska kommunerna deltar aktivt. Andra aktörer inom regional utveckling är bl a NUTEK och ITPS. NUTEK skall genom finansiering och affärsutveckling, rådgivning och information, nätverksbyggande och kunskap bidra till fler nya företag och växande företag. ITPS har i uppdrag att förbättra kunskapsunderlagen för en fram-synt tillväxtpolitik.

Regional development in Sweden is mainly about the development of infrastructure, business and economy, but in later years and increased importance has also been placed on culture, environment and social development.
The county administrative boards have traditionally been responsible for the work with regional development. In certain counties the responsibility for regional development has been transferred to so called regional self-governing bodies. These exist today in the counties of Skåne and Västra Götaland and in the municipality of Gotland.
The county councils are also responsible for regional development and Swedish municipalities participate actively in this work. Other actors in the regional development field include NUTEK (The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth) and ITPS (The Swedish Institute for Growth Policy Studies). NUTEK's task is to contribute to more new companies and the growth of companies through financing and business development, advice and information, the building of networks and knowledge. The task of ITPS is to improve the knowledge basis for a far-sighted growth policy.
