Vid regionplanering berörs minst två kommuner. Regionplaneringen handhas av ett regionplaneorgan. Till regionplaneorgan kan regeringen utse ett kommunalförbund. För regionplanering för kommunerna i Stockholms län finns särskilda bestämmelser. Regionplanering har dock en ganska begränsad användning i Sverige.

Regional planning is to concern at least two municipalities. Regional planning is dealt with by an regional planning authority. The government can appoint a statutory joint authority as the regional planning authority. For regional planning covering the municipalities in the county of Stockholm special regulations exist. However, regional planning has only fairly limited use is Sweden.
